The School of Historical Studies at Newcastle University is pleased to advertise between 4 and 6 Masters Studentship Awards for postgraduate study in Newcastle’s Wellcome Trust recognised MA programme in the History of Medicine during the academic year 2009-10. The closing date for applications is 30 April 2009.

The stipends for these awards will be set as follows: Two studentships will be awarded at either £15,000 (including home/EU fees) for full-time home/EU students, or £20,000 (including international fees) for full-time non-EU students of outstanding merit; the other studentships will be awarded at either £5,000 (including home/EU-fees) for meritorious full-time home/EU students, or £10,000 (including international fees) for non-EU students. Part time studentships will be awarded to meritorious applicants at c. half the above rate per annum.

The studentships are funded by the Northern Centre for the History of Medicine and will be available as of September 2009. The Northern Centre is a partnership between the Universities of Newcastle and Durham, and is supported by the Wellcome Trust. Successful applicants will join the postgraduate community based at the School of Historical Studies at Newcastle University. Postgraduate teaching and research supervision in the History of Medicine at Newcastle is delivered by scholars with established international reputations in the field.

Eligibility: Applications for the studentship are invited from highly motivated
graduates from various backgrounds including the Humanities and Social Sciences (e.g. History, Classics, Philosophy, Literature, Religious Studies, Archaeology, Psychology, Sciences, Sociology etc.). Applicants require a good (or predicted) undergraduate degree result (1st or high 2:1) in such a subject. Candidates with a medical background are also strongly encouraged to apply, and the studentship is open to current stage 4 Newcastle medical students who have opted to take the MA in the History of Medicine as an intercalated degree after stage 4 MBBS. Applications from overseas candidates with equivalent qualifications are also very welcome.

Application procedure: Applicants are asked to send: i) a CV and list of academic qualifications and experience; ii) a personal statement and letter of application outlining reasons for wanting to pursue postgraduate study in the history of medicine at Newcastle and highlighting specific research interests (max 300 words), iii) copies of any relevant certificates and transcripts, and (iv) letters of recommendation from two academic referees. COP15 Climate Conference: Denmark skips gifts and educates youth in stead

The Danish Government has decided to establish a ‘COP15 Climate Scholarship’ for money saved pursuant to its policy of not giving gifts to participants at the Climate Conference in Copenhagen later this year.

At similar international conferences, participants usually receive gifts and so-called conference-kits with various items from the host country. At the COP15 in Copenhagen the number of participants is expected to reach 15.000. As part of its efforts to reduce the environmental and climate impact of the conference, the government has decided to discontinue the practice of giving gifts. The DKK 4 million (app. USD 700.000) hereby saved will instead be spent on climate scholarships allowing 10-12 candidates from all over the world to carry out 2-year climate related master’s programs at Danish universities.

“Our 0-gift policy and the COP15 Climate Scholarship are good signals to send at a conference which requires innovation in terms of the way we use our resources. Although there is no doubt as to the good intentions behind giving gifts, we have often experienced how conference kits end up in garbage bins at conference venues and hotels. We want break that habit in Copenhagen and spend the money in a constructive way”, says Minister for Development Cooperation, Ulla Tørnæs.

“The COP15 Climate Scholarship puts a spotlight on Denmark’s strong position in climate related research and the good possibilities for qualifying yourself at Danish universities. Besides, the scholarship is in line with the Government’s goal to increase the exchange of students across borders. With this scholarship, we hope to welcome a group of clever young people from all over the world who will become highly motivated to make a difference, and furthermore will get an exhaustive knowledge about Danish technology and research”, says Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, Helge Sander.

Pemerintah Provinsi DKI Jakarta membuka lowongan bagi
masyarakat untuk menjadi pegawai negeri sipil. Sebanyak 7.213 posisi ditawarkan
dengan rincian 5.854 terbuka untuk masyarakat dari berbagai disiplin ilmu dan
1.359 dari pegawai tidak tetap (PTT).
Wakil Gubernur DKI Jakarta Prijanto, Kamis (27/11) di Balaikota DKI Jakarta,
mengatakan, penambahan jumlah pegawai negeri sipil (PNS) diperlukan karena pada
periode 2008-2009 ada 4.791 PNS yang memasuki masa pensiun. Posisi para PNS yang
pensiun itu harus langsung diisi dengan promosi pegawai di bawahnya. PNS baru
itu mengisi kekosongan di bawahnya.
Selain itu, Pemprov DKI Jakarta membutuhkan 2.405 sarjana untuk mempercepat laju
pembangunan. Para sarjana itu akan dialokasikan untuk mengisi berbagai posisi
fungsional.

Pemprov DKI juga akan merekrut 1.305 orang ahli madya lulusan D-III di bidang
akuntansi dan komputer untuk menjadi pelaksana teknis. Di sisi lain, 1.359
pegawai tidak tetap (PTT) yang sudah mengabdi selama ini akan segera diangkat
menjadi PNS.
Lowongan untuk PNS baru akan dibuka pada Maret atau Juni 2009. Semua orang yang
ingin menjadi PNS harus menjalani tes tertulis dan tidak ada keistimewaan bagi
siapa pun.
Setiap calon PNS yang direkrut akan ditempatkan sesuai dengan latar belakang
pendidikan masing-masing. Ketepatan penempatan itu akan sangat penting dalam
mendukung kinerja birokrasi pemerintah.

PhD Studentship, University of Cambridge: History of the Placenta
since 1750

Supervisors: Martin H. Johnson and Nick Hopwood

The Centre for Trophoblast Research at the University of Cambridge
aims to fund up to three PhD studentships at Wellcome Trust rates
starting in October 2009 for three years of full-time research

offering a project on the history of the placenta.

The placenta has a rich and important past that has yet to attract
sustained historical attention. Possible projects could focus on such
various aspects

as anatomy, physiology and evolution, pathological
examination and legal regulation, midwifery, obstetric and lay
practices, and claims as to the placenta's special powers. There is
wide scope to choose a topic of interest in a period since 1750 and
with an appropriate geographical location.

Supervision will be provided by Martin H. Johnson (Physiology,
Development and Neuroscience) and Nick Hopwood (History and
Philosophy of Science). The project will benefit from participation
in the University's programme of historical research on generation
and reproduction and specifically on embryology.

Interested students (UK, EU or overseas) should have at least a high
upper second (or equivalent) in a first degree, preferably in the
biological sciences, and ideally also a strong performance in a
master's in history of science and/or medicine. We invite initial
expressions of interest, including a CV and sample of written work,
by 10 December 2008 for a Centre deadline of 9 January and interview
on 28 January 2009.

50 Cent Reduces Paris Hilton to Tears

(Feb. 4) - Paris Hilton cried at a Super Bowl party, and it had nothing to do with the New England Patriots' bitter defeat.

Hilton was hosting a pre-Super Bowl bash in Arizona last week, dancing in front of partygoers. But when party guest of honor 50 Cent showed up, things got ugly. It's one thing to read about it, but another thing to see it.

Paris attempted to dance on stage with the rapper, who was having none of it. 50 Cent shouted "Get the F--K off my stage." Paris broke down in tears, crying to a party planner "but it's my party."

PageSix.com reports that several members of Hilton's entourage swarmed paparazzi at the party, but weren't able to stop photos of Hilton tearing up from being taken. The site also reports that Hilton and 50 Cent remain friends after the incident.

Spears’ dad to retain control until Feb. 14

LOS ANGELES - A court commissioner on Monday extended the temporary conservatorship of Britney Spears to her father and an attorney until Feb. 14 and appointed a physician to evaluate her competence to make decisions.

The hearing came three days after her father, James Spears, and her attorney, Andrew Wallet, were granted temporary conservatorship after Superior Court Commissioner Reva Goetz ruled that Spears needed someone to take over her personal and financial affairs.

Goetz’s decision might not sit well with Spears, who remains in a hospital psychiatric ward undergoing a medical evaluation. Adam Streisand, who sought to enter the case as Spears’ lawyer, said in court that the pop star told him her dad shouldn’t be named the conservator of her and her estate.

“She has expressed to me very strongly that her father not be the conservator,” Streisand said. “There has been an estrangement for quite some time. With him as conservator, that is causing her more agitation and more distress.”

Despite Streisand’s pleas, Goetz denied his request to represent Spears.

In addition, Goetz ordered Spears to have no contact whatsoever with her friend and sometime manager Sam Lutfi, specifying that she can’t reach him by phone, text message or by any other means. Goetz also extended a restraining order against Lutfi.

The restraining order has not been served on Lutfi, court spokesman Allan Parachini said, declining to elaborate.

A court-appointed attorney also weighed in on the Spears case. Samuel Ingham said he interviewed Spears on Sunday at UCLA Medical Center, determining that she didn’t understand the court proceedings, and that “she lacks the capacity to retain counsel.”

Streisand argued that Spears hadn’t been given any notice of Ingham’s plan to interview her, saying Ingham appeared at the hospital unannounced.
Vivian Thoreen, attorney for Spears’ father, said her client should continue to be conservator because “his daughter is in great distress.”

“He’s not here to take over her assets,” Thoreen said. “He’s here to get her medical help. He’s here to take over while she’s healing.”

Spears was originally to be released Sunday after a 72-hour mental evaluation. But doctors and a ward medical officer cited California law to keep her for two weeks, said a person close to the pop star who requested anonymity.

The state law allows patients to be kept for medical treatment if they are found to be gravely disabled or a danger to themselves or others.

Streisand also told Goetz that the Spears estate has assets totaling $40 million and that one of her entities is being audited by the IRS.

Earlier Monday, a child custody hearing was held but continued because of Spears’ condition.

Junior Year Program in English - Student Exchange Programs

The main purpose of Junior Year Program in English (JYPE) is to offer an opportunity for you to take science, engineering, and education courses at Tohoku University, without having to attain the Japanese language proficiency that would be necessary to take the same courses in Japanese. All lectures are given in English and course credit will be given by the standards for the equivalent courses offered in Japanese.
We recommend that you take two semesters (one-year), because some classes are designed for a whole year. However, a few students can be admitted for a single semester(6 months).
How do I apply?
For overseas student at one of Tohoku University’s partner universities, you can contact your Exchange Program Coordinator for information about applying to Tohoku University as an exchange student.The Coordinator will be able to give you information about our selection criteria and will be available to assist you through the application and selection processes.
Your application must be submitted through the Exchange Program Coordinator at your home institution and you cannot make apply directly Tohoku University.
RequirementsTo be considered for the Student Exchange program for one semester or one year of study at Tohoku University, you must:• be an undergraduate or postgraduate student at your home university after completing the exchange program.• have completed at least one year of study towards a degree at a recognized institution in your home country and be continuing towards the degree of your home institution.• have a good grade average.• have financial support of 80,000 yen per month during your stay in Japan.
